Grid Prix: Michigan’s only crossword tournament is off to the races March 19 in Hamtramck.

Registration is now open. Sign up here

What to expect:

Grid Prix takes place on March 19th and consists of four puzzles. All participants will solve three themed puzzles of increasing difficulty levels (think New York Times Tuesday-Thursday). Puzzles will be scored based on a combination of speed and accuracy, with the top three scoring competitors competing in a final themeless puzzle.

Non-eligible participants may still solve the 4th puzzle by hand (albeit not for points) or watch the finalists as they compete on easel boards in front of the audience.

Who can come?

Anyone with a love for crossword puzzles. No previous competition experience needed - you may surprise yourself! Don’t worry about not being “fast enough,” since time spent solving puzzles alongside likeminded people is always time well spent.

Participants can compete solo or as a pair. Entry is $20 per person, with options for free or discounted admission (just email us)! We ask that participants register in advance, although a few spaces will be reserved for same-day entry at the door. Due to limited capacity, there will not be room for non-competitors so leave your friends and adoring fans at home.

If you are connected with a media outlet and would like to attend, shoot us an email

What to bring:

Your favorite pencil, plus erasers and sharpeners if needed. Table space may be limited (though there will be seating for all) so a clipboard is also recommended if you have one. We will have a few extra of those on hand as well.

Schedule of Events:

6:30 Registration opens, warm up games and time to mix and mingle with fellow participants (and size up the competition!)

7:00 Puzzles 1-3

8:15 Puzzles are totaled, finalists announced

8:30 Championship puzzle + prizes

Other things to know:

Book Suey is located in the old bank building on the southwest corner of Joseph Campau and Caniff. Free street parking is available but may be limited. Additional parking in the library lot down the block may be available if you are willing to walk a little bit.

Hamtramck is home to many diverse dining options, including late-night bites, if you are planning to eat beforehand or get a drink after. Some of our favorites:

  • Henrietta Haus (Cafe known for their rotating menu of sourdough pizzas, salads, and an extensive Belgian beer selection, plus cocktails and N/A options)
  • Polish Village (Traditional Polish food in a cozy dining room)
  • Royal Kabob (Authentic Middle Eastern food with a recently renovated dining room)
  • Kelly’s Bar (The best bar burger and wings in town, with great ambiance and a pool table)
  • Florian East (Microbrewery that occasionally has food popups)
  • Amar Pizza (Bangladeshi style pizza. We recommend the Naga, the Tandoori, or if you’re really advanced, the Ghost Pepper Pizza! Carryout only)
  • Bars, bars and more bars! This little town sure knows how to party. Some of our favs include: Bumbo’s, High Dive, Black Salt, Painted Lady, Outer Limits Lounge* (check beforehand if there is live music/door entry fee)
